AUGUST 9 at 7:00PM & AUGUST 10 at 3:00PM

Kate Haggerty Varley as Margaret Johnson.

A lush and soaring romance unfolds in a concert production* of Adam Guettel’s sweeping Tony Award-winning score and Craig Lucas’ profound book in this must-see story of a mother, a daughter, and the many meanings of love. Florence, summer 1953. Protective American mother Margaret Johnson brings her daughter Clara abroad for a glimpse of Italy’s romantic history. But when a real-life attraction sparks between Clara and a local boy, Margaret must ask: can she reconcile her own hopes with her daughter’s future?

The winner of 6 Tony Awards, we are producing this extraordinary musical on the 20th anniversary of it's much lauded bow at Lincoln Center Theater.

*What is a "concert production"?

Modeled on New York City Center's Encore Series, the concert production is staged and done with minimal scenery. Actors may choose to be on book, needing script in hand, or not. Previous concerts at Civic have included Stephen Sondheim's "Follies", Andrew Lloyd Weber's "Evita", and Jason Robert Brown's "Parade". This performance is musically directed by Andrew Rudderow and features a five piece ensemble: harp, violin, cello, bass and piano.
